The third day of the trial stars today.

It is the most important of the ESMA trials, since it involves 789 cases, the highest number of victims since the nullification of the Due Obedience and Full Stop laws.   Among the 68 accused to undergo oral and public prosecution  are eight pilots who took part in the so-called “death flights”, the operation organized by the past civilian and military dictatorship to throw alive from Navy and Air Force planes into the Río de la Plata waters a number of men and women kept captive at illegal detention centers.   Among the accused is also Juan Alemann, former Finance Secretary of the military dictatorship, accused of having witnessed the interrogation and tortures to Orlando Ruiz, who was accused of having taken part in a terrorist attack against Alemann. Ruiz is now reported “missing”.

Astiz is one of the 68 accused.

The former Navy officers and non-commissioned officers who were part of the “Task Force 3.3.2”, already sentenced in Oct. 2011, are again included in this case, accused of taking part in a large number of kidnappings, tortures and homicides perpetrated more than 30 years ago and that still remain unpunished.   Alfredo Astiz and Eduardo Acosta are, among others, now held responsible for the kidnapping of Swedish teen-ager Dagmar Hagelin in 1977, who was shot in the street, taken to ESMA and now is part of the “missing” list.
